Earlier, he had scored a century in the ODI series against Sri Lanka. Against New Zealand at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad, Shubman Gill completed his century in 87 balls with the help of 14 fours and 2 sixes. Shubman Gill completed his half-century in 52 balls. He completed his century by scoring 50 runs in the next 35 balls.

Shubman Gill scored his first century in his 10th ODI. He achieved this feat against Zimbabwe. After which he scored his second century in the recently concluded ODI series against Sri Lanka. He scored 116 against Sri Lanka and now he has scored a century in the very first match of the three match ODI series against New Zealand.

Earlier in the ODI series against Sri Lanka, when Captain Rohit Sharma selected Gill as the opener in the team, people raised questions because Ishaan Kishan had scored a double century against Bangladesh with his team and people had replaced him with Gill. Wanted to see Rohit opening with him, but the captain reposed faith in Gill and Gill kept his hopes alive.
