A congressman posted on Twitter a video made at his ancestral home in Palacade, Kerala. In the video, he wears a traditional red Kurt and white and gold mundu costume hanging from a branch, adorned with yellow flowers and having a good time swinging.
Tharoor said the tradition is usually followed by young girls.

The tradition of quake is known as Oonjal and is an integral part of the Onam Festival. According to holidaypot.com, on days leading to Thiruonam, the swing is hung on tall tree branches and decorated with flowers. Young people love this ceremony. It is also accompanied by several traditional folk songs.

Onam is a harvest festival in honor of King Mahabali and is mostly celebrated in Kerala. It usually corresponds to the month of Qinghai according to the Malayalam calendar. The main three days of this year’s festival are August 21-23.
