The fastest 9000 Test runs in Test cricket was made by former Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara. Kumar Sangakkara had touched this magical figure in his 172nd Test innings. Earlier this world record was recorded in the name of former India captain Rahul Dravid, who did this feat in 176 Test innings. Australia’s legendary batsman Steve Smith has a chance to break Kumar Sangakkara’s world record and this can only be seen in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy starting on 9 February.

Steve Smith has so far scored 8647 runs in 162 innings of 92 Tests. Smith still needs 353 more runs to reach 9000 Test runs. If Smith manages to make this 353 Test runs in the next eight innings as well, then Kumar Sangakkara’s world record will collapse. In this way, Smith will have a chance to go past legends like Sangakkara, Dravid, Brian Lara, Ricky Ponting, Mahela Jayawardene and Sachin Tendulkar in terms of fastest to 9000 Test runs.

Smith has so far scored 8647 runs in 162 innings of 92 Tests at an average of 60.89. Smith has 30 centuries and 37 half-centuries in his account. Smith is also in good form these days, so he can destroy this world record only during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. However, the bowlers of Team India including R Ashwin would definitely like to prevent him from achieving this feat in this Test series.
